Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) is embarking on a major expansion to meet the growing demands of Telangana’s urban population. As part of long-term planning, HMWSSB is extending its jurisdiction from 1,400 square kilometers to 2,050 square kilometers, ensuring better water supply and sewage management for the rapidly growing Telangana Core Urban Region (TCUR).
How HMWSSB is solving Hyderabad water crisis
Hyderabad and its surrounding regions have witnessed rapid urbanization over the past decade, with new residential and industrial zones emerging beyond existing municipal boundaries. Despite this growth, water supply infrastructure has remained stagnant, with the city’s supply capped at 550 Million Gallons per Day (MGD) for over 10 years, while demand continues to rise.
The new jurisdiction plan brings peripheral zones under HMWSSB’s direct management, enabling:
Efficient water distribution to underserved areas
Modern sewage treatment to protect water bodies
Improved monitoring of unauthorized water usage
Infrastructure planning for future population growth

HMWSSB Telangana water supply expansion plan 2025
To support this geographic growth, HMWSSB is rolling out critical water and sewage infrastructure, including:
- Latest Godavari drinking water project Project Phase II & III, Telangana
₹7,360 crore investment to deliver 20 TMCFT of drinking water, with 15 TMCFT allocated for Hyderabad city and 5 TMCFT to refill key reservoirs. - 39 New Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) Future of sewage management in Hyderabad Telangana
₹3,840 crore investment aimed at eliminating untreated sewage discharge into reservoirs like Osman Sagar, Himayat Sagar, and Musi River. - Water Audit & Smart Controls:
Pilot programs in Tellapur and surrounding areas to track water flow with smart meters, solar valves, and mobile app integration to curb wastage.
The Water Supply Gap
Despite being Telangana’s capital, Hyderabad faces a significant water supply shortfall:
Year | Daily Water Supply (MGD) | Daily Water Demand (MGD) | Shortfall (MGD) |
---|---|---|---|
2015 | 550 | 600 | 50 |
2024 | 550 | 670 | 120 |
With urban boundaries expanding, the water demand is only expected to increase, making the upcoming projects vital for the region’s sustainability.
Hyderabad Water Supply & Sewerage Future Projects
The Telangana government’s push to expand HMWSSB’s operational reach reflects a proactive approach to urban management. By integrating peripheral regions and investing in advanced infrastructure, authorities aim to create a future-ready water and sewage system that meets the demands of a booming metropolitan area.
