Hyderabad Ranked– Achieves Major Milestone in Cleanliness Drive
In a significant recognition of its urban sanitation efforts, Hyderabad has been declared the 6th-cleanest megacity in India under the Swachh Survekshan 2024–25 rankings, a national cleanliness survey conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. What adds even more glory to this feat is the city’s coveted 7-star Garbage-Free City tag, making Hyderabad a standout example among urban centers.
This achievement reflects consistent infrastructure upgrades, innovative solid waste management, and effective citizen participation.
What is Swachh Survekshan?
Swachh Survekshan is the world’s largest cleanliness survey, conducted annually across thousands of Indian cities. The rankings are based on several criteria including:
- Waste segregation and disposal
- Public toilet availability and cleanliness
- Citizen feedback
- Urban greenery and pollution levels
- Sanitation awareness campaigns
For 2024–25, over 4,300+ urban local bodies participated, and megacities were categorized separately to recognize large-scale urban efforts.

Why Hyderabad Ranked High in 2024–25
Here are key factors that pushed Hyderabad into the top tier:
1. Integrated Solid Waste Management
Hyderabad has implemented a zonal waste segregation system, with over 70% of residential societies and commercial complexes now complying with dry and wet waste separation. Composting units and waste-to-energy plants have reduced landfill dependence.
2. Citizen Participation
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) ran several campaigns, such as:
- “Bin Free Hyderabad”
- “100% Door-to-Door Collection”
- “Swachh App” for real-time grievance redressal
These created a city-wide engagement model that directly impacted scores.
3. 7-Star Garbage-Free Certification
To get the 7-star garbage-free tag, cities must demonstrate:
- No open dumping of garbage
- Visible cleanliness in residential and public areas
- Waste processing capacity above 80%
Hyderabad fulfilled all these benchmarks and passed 3rd-party audits.
4. Improved Public Toilets and Slum Sanitation
GHMC upgraded over 2,000 public toilets, installed e-toilets, and developed slum sanitation centers with proper water supply and maintenance.
5. Technology-Driven Monitoring
Smart sensors on garbage trucks, GPS-tracking of sanitation workers, and drone-based landfill monitoring helped improve overall urban hygiene efficiency.
Secunderabad Cantonment: Cleanest Cantonment Area
Adding to the twin city’s glory, Secunderabad Cantonment was declared the cleanest cantonment area in India. Its community-driven solid waste reduction strategies and excellent drainage maintenance were applauded at the national level.
What This Means for Residents
- Better waste disposal systems
- Cleaner roads, footpaths, and neighborhoods
- Rise in property values in clean localities
- Encouragement for civic engagement and public responsibility
Final Thoughts
Hyderabad’s rise as the 6th-cleanest megacity and its 7-star status highlight its strong civic governance and public cooperation. With continued support from residents, smart infrastructure, and dedicated urban planning, Hyderabad is steadily moving toward becoming one of India’s most sustainable urban hubs.
