Hyderabad, July 3, 2025: A recent health report has raised alarm over the dietary patterns of urban residents in Telangana, revealing that an average person consumes approximately 2,455 calories per day, with a staggering 43% of those calories coming from rice.

Telangana urban nutrition report shocking facts : While rice remains a staple food across South India, nutritionists warn that this carbohydrate-heavy diet is triggering a silent health crisis. Experts from the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) say over-reliance on rice, coupled with insufficient intake of vegetables, proteins, and essential vitamins, is contributing to rising obesity rates, diabetes, and widespread micronutrient deficiencies in urban Telangana.

Telangana rice overconsumption health effects

Studies indicate that excessive rice intake, without balancing with diverse food groups, leads to:
✔️ Rapid weight gain
✔️ Vitamin and mineral deficiencies (especially Iron, Vitamin D, and B12)
✔️ Increased risk of lifestyle diseases like Type 2 Diabetes
✔️ Poor muscle mass and immunity issues

“People believe rice gives energy, but overconsumption without nutritional balance can harm metabolic health,” said Dr. Meena Rao, a Hyderabad-based dietitian.

Call for a Dietary Shift

Public health officials urge residents to diversify their diets by including:
🥗 More vegetables, pulses, and millets
🥛 Adequate dairy and lean protein sources
🍎 Fruits and nuts for essential vitamins and fiber

The Telangana government is also considering awareness campaigns to encourage millet consumption, given their nutritional richness and role in managing lifestyle disorders.
