Telangana High Court Lifts local Study Rule for MBBS/BDS – Major Relief for over 10,000 Students

Hyderabad, July 24, 2025 – In a landmark judgment, the Telangana High Court has temporarily lifted the controversial rule that required students to have completed four years of study in Telangana to be eligible for BDS and MBBS admissions. This decision comes as a big relief to thousands of students holding valid residence certificates, who were previously barred from applying.

What Was the Telangana High Court Rule?

Until now, candidates applying for state medical admissions in Telangana were required to:

  • Study in Telangana for at least four consecutive years, or
  • Have parents who are employees of the Telangana government, armed forces, or public sector units posted in the state.

This rule excluded several students—especially children of private sector employees and migrant families—despite them holding genuine Telangana residence certificates.

What Did the Telangana High Court Say?

After multiple petitions were filed by aggrieved students and parents, the High Court issued an interim order allowing such students to apply for MBBS/BDS seats for now. The order came just as the medical counselling process was set to begin.

📌 Next Hearing: The court will take a final call on July 30, 2025.

This interim relief ensures that no eligible student is unfairly denied a chance to compete while the matter is still under review.

Why Does It Matter?

  • Around 10,000+ students may benefit from this decision.
  • Helps children of private employees, inter-state migrants, and central staff.
  • Prevents disruption of academic careers due to bureaucratic interpretations of local status.

What Should MBBS and BDS Students Do Now?

If you’re affected:

  1. Check the official counselling portal and apply as per the interim guidelines.
  2. Submit your residence certificate and other required documents.
  3. Track court updates before the July 30 hearing for final verdict implications.

This High Court ruling sends a strong message about balancing regional reservation policies with constitutional equality and fairness. While the Telangana government defends its local priority policies, the judiciary is ensuring that no deserving student is left behind.

Stay tuned for more updates after the July 30 court hearing.
